Day 2: Gardnerville, NV to Ely, NV
Summary:
Roads:
After a nice breakfast (prepared by Phyllis - she sure is a great cook!) I took off for Ely. Highway 50 is called 'the loneliest road' in America. Well, on a Sunday morning it is pretty empty once you get past Fallon (where the Navy's Top Gun school is now located). The Nevada high desert landscape was wonderfully green. The past winter dropped lots of snow and rain and really made things much easier on the eyes. This was a pretty long day on the bike: I made stops in Austin (lunch and gas) and Eureka (time for a soda) to break the trip up a little bit. When I arrived at the KOA in Ely I found that my tent site was down a loop road covered in soft, deep gravel! No fun at all. I had to find a big rock to put under the kickstand - otherwise the bike would have simply fallen over. A group of motorcycles pulled in about an hour after I got there. I had seen these folks (three couples) earlier in Eureka, at DJ's Diner. They had a Goldwing, a big Harley and a big Yamaha cruiser. The Goldwing was pulling an 1800 pound pop-up camping trailer! Talk about traveling in luxury! Early to bed - I was asleep by the time the sun went down. As the campground was at about 6200' elevation the night was nice and cool after the warm day which made for a good night's rest.
