Day 23: Roanoke, VA to Hancock, MD
We had been told that West Virginia had some great roads to ride. That information was definitely right! We spent a day cruising on country roads that went up, down, left and right, with lots of pretty countryside to keep you entertained. We made a point to go through Greenbank, where we saw the GBT or Great Big Thing. This is really the largest fully steerable radio telescope in the world: 130 meters high, with a dish 100x110 meters. You don't really get a sense of how big it is until your right up close to it - then it is really impressive. I'm afraid that my pictures don't do it justice. By the time we finally got to the motel at the end of a long day we were all tired. After dinner I had one beer to celebrate my 58th birthday and then quickly fell asleep. |
